Highlights of the Trip
- Hiking the Awa'awapuhi trail in Waimea Canyon, Kauai
- Lava flow at night
- Telescope viewing on Mauna Kea
- Rock formations at Mauna Ulu
- The Hilina Pali road/viewpoints
Notes for Future Trips
- Pre-book all inter-island flights with Aloha airlines for $80
(unrestricted). If need to change one, it costs nothing. Don't use restricted
($60) fares.
- Pre-book rental cars on ALL islands. Don't get insurance or gas options.
Use Dollar rent-a-car. Mid-size cheap car is fine, except for Hawaii where 4WD
might be needed.
- Reserve all campsites WAY in advance
- Stay at the Hale Kai Bjornen again. Elsewhere, try to book bed and
breakfasts rather than hotels. Much better.
- Take helicopter tour of Kauai (Blue Hawaiian was good).
- Backpack the Hilina'Pali trails.
- Hike the big trail out into the crater.
- Try bicycling crater rim road/ chain of craters road/ or Hilina Pali road
- Backpack the Kalalau trail (low priority)
- Scuba diving
Some Notes
All photos were taken with a Canon S100 Digital Camera. Maps were
made using a Garmin Etrex Legend and the MapSource software (using the Topo
data).
